Developing a Healthy Bite

Treatment Methods

Like a lock and key, the upper teeth are intended to fit into and work harmoniously with the lower teeth.  With some patients, the upper teeth don’t match or fit with the lower teeth.  This is called a ‘malocclusion’.  There are many different malocclusions.  Some mild malocclusions may never cause a problem, while others can lead to premature tooth loss, facial disfigurement, an inability to chew or even chronic TMJ pain.

There are many methods used to overcome these problems.

Some therapies include:

  • Reshaping the biting surfaces of the teeth.  Done carefully, this procedure can redistribute the excessive forces that can fracture teeth or weaken the supporting bone.
  • Some patients grind their teeth, over exerting the forces the teeth were intended to endure.  When this happens, teeth become weak, brittle and show advanced wear far beyond their years.  Overloading the TMJ can also result in failure of the joint, arthritis or other reasons of chronic joint pain.  A simple devise worn daily or at night may diminish or eliminate this problem.  Many patients find that ‘Bite Splints’ are a real life saver, providing joint pain relief.
  • Over time, fillings, crowns, fixed bridges and removable partials can also show wear from daily use.  Some replacement or repair may be indicated.
  • A long life or a bite that is not centered can result in excessive wear patterns for some or all of the teeth.  Badly worn or damaged teeth may require restoration by your General Dentist.

When teeth are improperly positioned in the arch, damage to the teeth or supporting jawbone may result.  In some cases, the best avenue for preserving your teeth and improving your smile may be Orthodontic care.  Braces have come a long way.  They now offer a desirable result for both children and adults.
