What are Dental Implants?

Dental implant supported tooth replacements look, feel, and function like natural teeth.   Dental implants help to restore healthy function, allowing patients to eat virtually anything and smile with confidence. Implants preserve a youthful look by avoiding the ‘sunken face appearance’ of aging caused by premature tooth loss. Patients love knowing that their smile appears natural and that facial contours will be preserved.

The implants themselves are small titanium posts that are completely biocompatible.  Biocompatibility just means that no one is allergic to them.  There is absolutely no allergic, immune response to these medical devices. Dr. Adornato will place a precise entry into the jawbone.  This procedure results in little to no discomfort during the process or following its completion.  Surgical experience and care are the keys to a pleasant result.  Once the dental implant is inserted into the bone the titanium fixture bonds directly to the surrounding bone.  That bond creates a strong foundation for the artificial teeth. Small posts that protrude through the gums are later attached to the implant. These posts provide stable attachments for artificial replacement teeth. Dental Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

The Surgical Procedure

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves one or two surgical procedures. Once Dr. Adornato provides an entry and places the implants into the bone, a healing time of 3-6 months is require to maximize a successful bonding between the implant and the jawbone.  In rare cases, this healing times can be shorter or longer.   In some cases, implants can even be transitionally restored immediately after they are placed.

For the first three to six months following the surgery, dental implants are quietly bonding with the jawbone. During that time, most patients return to a normal diet.  Temporary full or partial dentures are often inserted on the day that the dental implants are placed.   Following the period of integration (healing) your restorative dentist will design the final crowns, bridgework or implant supported dentures that will ultimately improve both your function and aesthetics.

After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the restoration phase begins. A dental impression of your new implants must be taken. Then posts or attachments can be connected to the implants. The teeth replacements are then made over the posts or attachments. The entire procedure usually takes a while.  Most patients experience little to no disruption in their daily life during the entire process.

What Types of Prosthesis are Available?

A single implant supported crown can be used to replace one missing tooth. An implant supported fixed bridge can replace two or more teeth and may require only two or three implants. A full arch implant supported fixed bridge replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. The number of implants varies depending upon which type of complete prosthesis (removable or fixed) is recommended. An implant retained over denture attaches to a bar or ball- in-socket attachments.  These dentures are removable but are securely fixed into place by the dental implants.
